Uruguay

A small country that's always been in Argentina's shadow, Uruguay has a rustic charm that's simply alluring.

You'll see that progress follows a different time table here than it does in Argentina (just across the River Plate), but we think that must be intentional - and really this makes Uruguay even more inviting.

Jose Ignacio and Punta del Este

Set on a narrow 40 mile peninsula, Punta del Este has long been the East Hampton or Saint Tropez for wealthy Buenos Aireans. Still a sleepy fishing village for a few months of the year, come November the well-connected and fashionable flock to enjoy the parties and crystal clear waters.

Today, the neighboring smaller fishing village of Jose Ignacio is rapidly becoming the place to be. Where there are high-rises in the centre of Punta del Este, Jose Ignacio has wonderful stucco hours each painted a different vibrant color. There are stunning beaches, beautiful walks along the coast and fabulous boutique hotel accommodation.

Colonia del Sacramento

One highlight to include on a trip to Buenos Aires, Argentina, is a short ferry ride to experience the quaint and rustic beauty of neighboring Uruguay. Your port of arrival is the charming Colonia del Sacramento, a four hundred years old town that evokes old Lisbon with its Portuguese-influenced architecture and winding streets.

From here you can complete your getaway with a visit to Montevideo, another great capital city and the commercial centre of this small Latin American country.
